TANOMARE/PAINTING

An essential part of the dress culture of women of southern Nigeria is the use of headgears commonly known as 'gele'. They are the cherry on top traditional attires. Often stylized in diverse ways, the occasion, personality and social status of the wearer determines how elaborate they would be, some of them becoming fascinating works of art. So essential is the 'gele' that there are professionals skilled in the art who render their services for a fee.

TANOMARE is one of my favorite paintings this month in a project that also created GATEKEEPER. Took about three weeks to complete because I was working on both and I didn't want to rush the idea. This was one of the the few times my diverse art preferences were made to work together.
